Mostar

Mostar

We took a local bus from Split, Croatia to Mostar where we checked into Hostel Delila, owned by two brothers who were really helpful! Our first day there we walked around the city and went to the top of the Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque for the best view of the Stari Most bridge. We went to the sniper tower to see remnants of the war that ended 20 years ago here; its chilling to see the bullet holes. There's a few buildings they purposefully haven't rebuilt to remind everyone of what happened here and I think it’s a powerful way to remind tourists and locals alike.

In the afternoon we got beers and watched guys jump from the bridge. We tried the local cevapi dish- small sausages flat bread and onions. Went to see the war museum with photos by a New Zealand photographer, Wade Goddard who took photos in Mostar during the siege.

The next day we did a tour that took us to Blagaj, Počitelj Old Town, an old airplane bunker built into the mountainside, and took a dip in the Kravice waterfalls. Our guide was incredible explaining the history of former Yugoslavia and the many different hands at play through history which led to the most recent war in Bosnia. Blagaj has an old monastery at the base of a massive cliff side with a beautiful clear blue lake at its base. The Kravice waterfalls were fun to explore around. The old airplane bunker was build during the Cold War by Tito who had loose ties with the US. It was later used during the war in Bosnia as well.
